The Processing Service is responsible for the intellectual and physical treatment of all documentary resources acquired by the Central Library, ensuring they are accessible, classified, and integrated into the library's information systems.
This department specializes in the technical and professional processing of the library's documentary holdings, adhering to international cataloging and standardized bibliographic description rules, using the open-source PMB library management system.
The library initiated the re-cataloging of its entire documentary collection and created the first comprehensive database containing all its holdings. This has facilitated bibliographic research for all library users, including faculty and students. The Central Library of Setif University is a pioneer in this endeavor and excels in it. The Central Library is now considered a major hub in the field of automated cataloging. The department's role can be summarized as follows:
Electronic cataloging of various information resources (both print and electronic), while also maintaining traditional cataloging practices, all based on international cataloging standards. Currently, we use the open-source PMB system.
We make theses available online and digitize them for all students in cooperation with the university's network center. We also maintain the library's website, provide online bibliographic search, and update it regularly. Furthermore, we monitor all information systems used in the library, including related equipment, and coordinate with various departments to ensure the necessary quality of work according to library quality assessment standards. This includes selecting subject headings, both simple and complex, preparing library catalogs, and compiling various bibliographic lists.
Document Reception & VerificationSystematic reception and physical verification of all incoming documents before registering them in the library management system.
Cataloguing & Bibliographic DescriptionCreation of detailed bibliographic records for each document using MARC21 standards.
Classification & IndexingApplication of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system to assign call numbers.
Physical Processing & LabellingPhysical preparation including stamping, spine labelling, barcoding, and protective covering.
Database Integration & OPACEntry of all processed documents into the PMB system, making them searchable through the online catalogue.
